Formulating for performance /

Feed formulation under pressure: balancing raw materials, cost and animal performance

What does a diet look like once it leaves the spreadsheet? Raw materials vary from batch to batch, prices push you to switch ingredients more often, and every change can shift digestibility, nutrient balance and palatability.

Add mycotoxins, spoilage and oxidation, and the feed you formulated may not be the feed the animal eats. Even a well-balanced diet only performs if the animal can digest, absorb and use it, and young or stressed animals often can’t do that fully.

Innovad works alongside you at both ends of the formulation. We help you protect what goes into the feed, through mycotoxin management and feed preservation, and help the animal get more out of it, through fat digestion, intestinal health and palatability. With Biomonitoring+, you can check which mycotoxins actually reached the animal, so formulation decisions rest on evidence rather than safety margins.

What you see in your formulations, and how we help you act on it

  1. Lower intake after a diet or raw material change Keep feed smell and taste consistent, so animals keep eating
  2. Mycotoxins in raw materials Reduce mycotoxin impact and confirm what reached the animal
  3. Spoilage, oxidised fats and vitamins Protect feed quality and nutritional value
  4. Fat and protein passing through undigested Improve fat digestion and nutrient use
  5. Uneven growth, intestinal problems Strengthen intestinal health and nutrient uptake

Tools and insights built for your role

01

We map the risks in your raw materials
Innovad helps you assess mycotoxins, oxidation and digestibility in your raw materials and diets. Where it matters, Biomonitoring+ shows what actually reached the animal.

02

Together, we build it into your formulation
Our technical team helps you select the solutions that fit your diet, species and production stage, and add them where they work best.

03

We measure the result with you
We help you follow performance, feed conversion and exposure over time, so you can adjust when raw materials change and show the value of every decision.

Nutritionists: frequently asked questions

How do raw material price changes affect nutritional performance?

Volatile prices push nutritionists to switch ingredients more often and use cheaper or less familiar raw materials. That can change digestibility, nutrient balance and palatability from one batch to the next. Keeping intake, digestion and feed quality consistent helps the diet deliver what it was formulated for.

Why is fat digestion a challenge, especially in young animals?

Fat is one of the most energy-dense ingredients, with at least twice the available energy of carbohydrates or protein. But before it can be absorbed, it has to be broken into tiny droplets, and young animals produce too little lipase and bile salts to do that well. A lot of that expensive energy simply passes through.

How common are mycotoxins in feed and raw materials?

Very common. In Innovad’s 2024 survey of more than 1,700 feed and raw material samples from 34 countries, 83% contained at least one mycotoxin and 60% contained two or more. 15.6% of samples exceeded European Commission limits.

Why look at blood results, and not just feed analysis?

Feed analysis shows what was in a sample, not what reached the animal, and many emerging mycotoxins fall outside routine panels. In Innovad’s biomonitoring work, 82% of farms had mycotoxins in their animals’ blood that feed analysis had missed.

How does Innovad work with nutritionists?

We assess the risks in your raw materials and diets together, help you choose the solutions that fit your formulation, species and production stage, and measure the result in the animal, so every decision can be backed by evidence.
